BLACK MTN South_Survey Jan. 20, 2012 : Black Mountain Open Space Park is owned and managed by the City of San Diego and is made up of a series of chaparral and sage covered hills, ridges, and canyons. It is located in the Rancho Peñasquitos area of northern San Diego, situated between Camino Del Sur to the west, Peñasquitos Drive to the east, Lusardi Creek to the north and Carmel Mountain Road to the south. The park is currently 2,352 acres, with expansion a future possibility. The center piece of the park is the 1,554 foot summit of Black Mountain which provides 360 degree views of the surrounding area. On a clear day the visitor can scan the horizon for ocean views to the west, mountain views to the north and east, and views of downtown San Diego to the south. This gallery represents a pre-survey of Black Mountain south accessed from Sundevil Way. This is for the phenology study that I am volunteering to support. Photos were taken on Jan. 20, 2012 in the late afternoon until dusk. The goal was to capture all flowering plants and their locations. I did my best to ID the plants by genus / species and would appreciate your review. Please write in a "comment" where corrections are needed. Most appreciated.

LUSARDI OPEN SPACE: APEX PREDATORS of ARTESIAN WAY ~ JAN 18 2012 : This gallery represents photos taken within 30 minutes of Sunset on Jan. 18, 2012. Apex predators were out in force: White-tailed Kites, Red-tailed Hawks, Gray Foxes, and American Kestrels. As these are high ISO, little Lightroom processing was done - basically cropping. Wanted to share the sequence of Coyote photos, the Kite hovering and the Red-tail dominating the electric tower. Last photo of White-tailed Kite flying over Artesian Way. Last week when I visited at dusk, I observed both Coyotes in the canyon and was treated to their calls. Ah wilderness!

SYCAMORE CANYON PRESERVE ~ San Diego County : SYCAMORE CANYON PRESERVE & GOODAN RANCH are in San Diego County. I was just recently made aware of this excellent preserve and visited on Dec 21, 2011. Please enjoy this virtual tour... and add your captions / corrections to my notes. Their website / brochure can be found on this link: http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/reusable_components/images/parks/doc/GoodanSycBrochure2011.pdf From the brochure: Sycamore Canyon and Goodan Ranch are enjoyable for their peaceful solitude, recreation opportunities, and natural beauty. Ten different vegetation habitats, including coastal sage scrub, southern mixed chaparral, oak woodlands, riparian, and native grasslands can be found in the Preserve. Within these habitats are 313 plant species including California sagebrush, buckwheat, chamise, lilac, Manzanita, lemonade berry, coast live oak, sycamores, arroyo willow, and various native grasses. Along with the plants, 73 bird species are recorded, 30 mammals, 18 amphibians and reptiles, and 46 invertebrates. Twelve of these species are specifically monitored as part of the MSCP, and 32 special-status species are listed by wildlife agencies. Animals more commonly seen are mule deer, coyote, bobcat, rattlesnakes, acorn woodpeckers, red-shouldered hawks and flycatchers.

LOS PENASQUITOS PRESERVE ~ Flora & Fauna : Los Penasquitos Preserve is located in San Diego County. Here is a gallery showcasing some of the denizens of the Preserve. This is an ongoing effort, so I invite you to return occasionally to enjoy the latest. Being that I live only 4 miles from the Preserve, I find myself hiking the trails frequently. The White-tailed Kites reside here and have been quite prolific this spring - 2009. Look for their amazing hover foraging flights right before sunset and after sunrise. These photos represent my visits to the canyon from early 2009 to the present 2011. Enjoy!

NISSAN LEAF - Zero Emissions Vehicle : Nissan LEAF is in prototype phase as of November 2009 - this is a gallery of one of the TWO units in the World! On November 19, 2009, at Nissan Design Center in San Diego, we took a good look at the car from all directions (but were not allowed to touch it of course). It was evening, so the rear light bar illuminated the blue pearl Electric Car with space-age design lines. The LEAF is expected to have a 100 mile range on a single charge and offers 100% torque at 0 RPM! San Diego will be a test market for the LEAF with deployment of charging stations in the city to accomodate new LEAF owners. In fact, the first 1,000 San Diegans who sign up and purchase a LEAF will receive free charging stations for their garage / parking area. That's quite a benefit ! Named "Quantum LEAF", it will be charged thru the Blink Charging station in my garage. Ramona Grasslands : From the County of San Diego website: The Ramona grasslands, west of the town of Ramona, feature habitat that has all but disappeared in the county. Its vernal pools, alkali playas, and native grasses make this an exceptional part of the natural heritage of San Diego. Many rare animals and plants make their homes in this area. Stephens' kangaroo rat, fairy shrimp, purple stipa, blue-eyed grass, and wooley blue curls are among the rare inhabitants. Birdwatchers are drawn to the grasslands for the spectacular number of hawks that spend the winter here. Santa Maria Creek, which runs through the grasslands, adds to the biodiversity. Although the grasslands preserve is not yet open to the public, a partnership of the County, The Nature Conservancy, and the Wildlife Research Institute is currently involved in a protection and restoration project, funded by a State Water Resources Control Board Proposition 13 grant. The County of San Diego and The Nature Conservancy have developed a biological management and monitoring plan. In cooperation with the community of Ramona and neighbors of the preserve, this partnership is working to enhance the health of the preserve and make it available to this and succeeding generations. This project is also in collaboration with the North County Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP), a 50-year County of San Diego plan to protect parks and open space. The goal of the MSCP is to maintain and enhance biological diversity in the region and maintain viable populations of endangered, threatened, and key sensitive species and their habitats. Anna's & Allen's Hummingbirds : Anna's Hummingbirds reside in San Diego. One day, the Anna's was preening his new breeding plumage. He has to stretch his neck up and then bend his bill down to get to the breast feathers, and in the process ends up looking like a blooming flower! Recently the Allen's Hummingbird has taken up residence in my wildlife habitat. These images show a valiant effort on the part of these hummingbirds to cooperate at the feeder on a chilly winter morning. There is certainly more than enough nectar to go around!

SAN ELIJO LAGOON : San Elijo Lagoon is a world class birding hot spot in coastal north San Diego County. This gallery was started in 2008 when I visited in October with San Diego Audubon Society. It will continue and share highlights over time. Early Saturday morning, I was treated to the sight of the American Kestrel female "hover hunting" for prey over the lagoon. With the early morning sunlight, it highlighted her fine feathers and aerial dynamics. She certainly worked hard for her breakfast! ~ Jeanie Anderson

4S Ranch ~ Flora : 4S Ranch Open Space is a protected area of north coastal San Diego County. On June 25, 2010, I took a hike in the early evening seeking birds. Well it turned out to be all about flowers as many species were in bloom. As the evening light faded, I discovered that flash photography gave a unique perspective to the flowers... with all their structure. These have not been photoshoped in any way... just RAW images. Since the lens is F4 ( my bird photo lens ) the depth of field is somewhat compromised. Enjoy! Please write in comments with species ID's. Thanks!

GREBES of Lake Hodges : In San Diego County, Lake Hodges has benefited from the plentiful rain in Spring 2010. The Western and Clark's Grebes are enjoying all this water ( it used to be a dried lake bed with trees !). On April 3rd, I visited in the morning ( Easter Sunday ) to witness for my first time their bonding ritual called "Rushing". Several weeks later, I visited in the early evening to capture the right light and was happy to see chicks on board! Back-brooding is the technical term... and it gives the chicks safety and warmth while their other parent hunts for fish. Enjoy this gallery of natures beautiful grebes . and know that it will expand as I have time to process the hundreds of photos already taken... and once more visit this amazing santuary for grebes. What I cannot convey is their calls... frequent and loud... they are gregarious and playful birds... sometimes playing chase for the fun of it! Sibley's characterizes their calls "kreed-kreet" for the Western and "kreeeed or kreee-eed for the Clark's. Great Blue Heron Rookery ~ Rancho Santa Fe : For the past 2 years, I have been observing the GREAT BLUE HERON Rookery located in Rancho Santa Fe. There is a tall Eucalyptus tree with 3 nests, which I will call Nest # 1 (lower), Nest # 2 (middle) and Nest # 3 (upper). In Spring 2009, the heron couples raised a total of 5 young, Nest # 1 - 1, Nest # 2 - 2, Nest # 3 - 2. For the breeding season of 2010, I began visiting this site on February 20th, and noted "home improvement" efforts by the herons. I will continue to observe and report findings as spring progresses. RAISED BED VEGGIE GARDEN : Here is a quick do it yourself garden project. With tortoises roaming my garden, I wanted to avoid them plowing down the vegetables, so we constructed a raised bed with inexpensive materials ( redwood fence boards - 8 inch / 6 inch - and 3/8 inch rebar segments -- cut to size at Home Depot ). The outside of the redwood is stained with Behr waterproofing stain making in an attractive color and adding durability. Veggies just planted on June 6th: Tomatoes, Basil, Parsley, Squash, Spinach, Tarrago, Peppers and Margolds as Border Patrol Agents! Being fascinated by Southern Ground Hornbills - and living in San Diego - I was fortunate to attend San Diego Zoo's BACKSTAGE in January 2010 and have a truely exceptional experience viewing the antics of Delilah the Zoo's Avian Ambassador. Thank you Kristina for sharing your amazing charge! She is a force to be reckoned with... especially if you are a SNAKE ! From Wikepedia: The Southern Ground-hornbill or cafer (Bucorvus leadbeateri), is one of two species of ground-hornbill and is the largest species of hornbill. It is a large bird, at 90 to 129 cm (36 to 51 in) long and a weight of 2.2 to 6.2 kg (4.8 to 13.6 lbs), with the male considerably larger than the female. It is characterized by black coloration and vivid red patches of bare skin on the face and throat (yellow in juvenile birds). The white tips of the wings (primary feathers) seen in flight are another diagnostic characteristic. The beak is black and straight and presents a casque, more developed in males. Female Southern Ground-hornbills are smaller and have violet-blue skin on their throats. Upper bodyIts habitat comprises savannahs, woodlands and grasslands. It can be found from northern Namibia and Angola to northern South Africa to Burundi and Kenya. The Southern Ground Hornbill is a vulnerable species, mainly confined to national reserves and national parks. They live in groups of 5 to 10 individuals including adults and juveniles. Often, neighbouring groups are engaged in aerial pursuits. They forage on the ground, where they feed on reptiles, frogs, snails, insects and mammals up to the size of hares. 4S Ranch ~ Artesian Road ~ Lusardi Creek : 4S Ranch is an unincorporated community in San Diego County, California, United States. To the east of 4S Ranch is the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo. To the west is the Santa Fe Valley. Lake Hodges forms the northern border of the community while Black Mountain Ranch and Rancho Penasquitos are to the south. The annual Rancho Santa Fe Christmas Bird Count circle encompasses 4S Ranch. The area has many habitats and a natural spring called Lusardi Creek. The Black Mountain Open Space is part of this region and covers 2780 acres. To encourage the coastal Cactus Wren, efforts are underway to plant prickly pear and cholla cactus. Hilights of the Jan. 3rd, 2010 CBC for the western section of the 4S Ranch count area are depicted in photos 1 thru 15. Lusardi Creek and other areas are covered with new photos published as field trips occur. Enjoy !

AMERICAN KESTREL at WRI : An American Kestrel wild caught female in fine condition is being displayed by ornithologist Chris at Wildlife Research Institute. January 2010. Some facts and figures: American Kestrel is our smallest and most colorful falcon. Formerly known as "sparrow hawks" because of their size, not their choice of prey, Kestrels are sexually dichromatic. The male has blue-gray wings and a rufous tail with a single broad subterminal black band, while the wings and tail of the female are rufous with black bars across their lengths. Kestrels also exhibits sexual size dimorphism, with the female about 10% heavier than the male. Kestrels have an amazing ability to "hover hunt" for prey. They face into the wind, alternately flap and glide their wings and balance with their tails. Trying finding your dinner on the wing ! Their diet includes insects, lizards, and small rodents.

Clarise the Falcon : The WILDLIFE RESEARCH INSTITUTE ( W R I ) is located in the Ramona Grasslands in Ramona, CA. WRI has Hawk Watch demonstrations every Saturday in January & February from 9 am to Noon. The STAR of this past Saturday's show was a very unique Falcon named Clarise. She is an Aplomado Peregrine Falcon hybrid and a beauty to say the least. Falconry is known as "the Sport of Kings". SAN DIEGUITO LAGOON ~ BIRDS : San Dieguito Lagoon in coastal San Diego has recently been restored. These photos were all taken on Valentines Day 2009 in the mid afternoon on a perfect day. Having just attended Phil Pryde's Intermediate Birding course, I had a yen to see the shore birds we had just covered in class. This was just the ticket and the tide gave some interesting contracts of land and water. If it isn't already apparent, I'm enraptured by the Great Blue Heron, particularly it's flight. I'm also actively monitoring a Great Blue rookery and have video footage of --- you guessed it! -- Baby Blues !! Will find time to upload someday soon. Enjoy... BIRDS @ EL CAMINO MEMORIAL PARK : El Camino Memorial Park is in Sorrento Valley San Diego is one of my favorite birding spots. They use reclaimed water to keep the grounds and trees lush and wildlife abounds. They have 2 ponds with lovely lilypad islands and a two tier waterfall setup so many ducks and herons visit frequently. I hear the fishing is good and the crawdads too. There are many American Robins, Western Bluebirds, Black Phoebes and Cassin's Kingbirds that call the Park home. Come on a virtual tour.

Mark Wilkinson - and - back then I wasn't into nature / hiking / birding as I am today. ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK ~ NOVEMBER 23, 2008 : I invite you to a virtual stroll around the Anza-Borrego Visitor Center early in the morning late November 2008. It is an inspiration to see how wild plants and animals find their niche in an arid land. The last rainfall in this area was back in February.

BURKE MUSEUM - UNIV OF WASH - SEATTLE : July 29, 2008: Tour of the Burke Museum Ornithological Collection led by Kevin Epperly. Sincere appreciation to the BURKE MUSEUM for the opportunity to tour the Ornithology Collections. Sievert Rohwer, Curator and Professor, Emeritus, graciously directed me to his staff for access and information. In particular, I am indebted to Sharon Birks, PhD, Genetic Resources Manager, for her detailed responses to all my questions and review of my photo gallery on SmugMug. Many thanks to Chris Wood, Collections Manager for Birds, for his expert coordination in setting up our tour appointment.
